Evaluation Question 6: What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Here I have used camtasia to demonstrate how I used Motion for my own title sequence:

Evaluation Question 5: How did you attract/address your audience?

Powered by emaze
We also reached our audience through: Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr. All of which are social networking sites that our target audience would use daily and frequently.

Evaluation Question 4: Who would be the audience for your media product?

Evaluation Question 7: Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Question 6 - Evaluation

Throughout the process of our film making we had to learn and develop our skills and understanding of the different technologies that we would have to use to create our title sequence. This was a trying and difficult task because it was mostly new to us. Having never used it before it was learning from scratch about how to make and edit music (Garage Band) , make title sequences (Motion) and To edit our overall filming (Final Cut Pro).

Motion

Motion was an application in which we had to make the titles for our film. This involved going through the process of finding a template that we felt best suited the pace and look of our film , and one that would look good when it came up.

This is what some of the title sequences looked like. For our group it was difficult to pic one because the looked good however we needed to bear in mind that the background and images wouldn't be shown anyway. So what we had to do was find one in which the words looked eye catching enough for the audience to watch it as opposed to plain white writing which most groups where going with.

Garage Band

Garage Band was useful for us but didn't come into our final piece. This application is used to make beats , loops and other forms of musical sounds which could have been exported and placed onto our soundtrack. This is an image of all the options that garage band has. However we were instructed to use loop to practice making our music. Garage band however wasn't really instrumental in our final products.

Final Cut Pro
The most vital and important piece of software we used was what we used to edit , shorten and infuse the music into our title sequence. Without final cut pro the creation of our film would have been impossible. Final cut pro taught me the most skills , how to cut and shorten videos and effects. From the reviews we got people felt our editing of our film , and the overall look of the film was very good.

Usefulness
Of all the software we used Final cut pro was the most useful. It allowed us to collect all of the other pieces we used , filming , editing , music and title sequences. It also allowed us to experiment and try other things and be more creative with our film before coming up with a final product in which we were all happy with

Question 6 Media Evaluation

Conclusion

The two videos above demonstrate how I used Motion, Garageband and Final Cut Pro. These softwares allowed me to expand my knowledge on the use of these technologies. It allowed me to expand my creativity nd I also learnt a lot of useful skills to achieve my final product. I found Motion particularly useful as it allowed me to include my credits and this was a key aspect of my film opening. Also I found Final Cut Pro extremely useful and its utility was uncontestable as it allowed me to edit my film and add all transitions and filters to my film. Overall these three were very useful technologies along with other such as the camera and the Mac I used to store all my footage.

Question 7 - Evaluation

Prelim
Earlier in the year , at the start of the media academic course we all got into groups and made up a very short clip. This was our preliminary task. In watching it we have seen the progress we have made from the start of the year into now showing how we have expanded our knowledge of media terms and methods in film making. The progress made has been notably obvious as we can compare and contrast the prelim activity to this current one.

Due to the prelim being filmed at the start of the year we had very little knowledge or understanding of how the technologies worked.

In our prelim we used simple camera angles. We remained close to the faces of the actors however used some shots we have recently learn about such as the 180degree rule and over the shoulder shots. This added slight complexity to our simple video.

Another thing we didn't really do was edit. The prelim has simple editing techniques such as quick generic cut scenes. Without the use of fading or other effects it made it rather dull or boring.

The Extra Mile
The Extra Mile is an example of progression from the start of the year to now. Our film involves so much more than what we started with. The skills of editing are evident. The use of fades , color change , rewind , and other complex editing techniques made our film popular among our viewers. Our prelim showed our starting process but this title sequence was a way to show our developed skills

Question 5 - Media Evaluation

This is a video of an interview with a member of our target audience asking them what it is about the film they found appealing. The interviewee is a member of our target audience as he is a young black male who is interested in rap music. I asked him how he how found out about the film, where he saw it and what he thought about the film. I also interviewed him as an actor in the film and I asked him how he found the promotional schedule and also what he did to promote his film effectively.

In summary, he responded positively as he said that the music was especially effective at attracting him and also it allowed him to relate to it. He said that the promotion for the film was effective as he was reached through social media which is an obvious tool for youths. If I was to redo the film I would make sure I include locations that are more relatable to our target audience.

This is one of the videos from the people at the cinema who watched our film. There where generally positive reponses from all people. The overall feeling was that the music and pace of the title sequence worked well and made it more memorable. They where able to relate to it more becase
a) The title sequemce was in an area they where all familar with - anegl
b) The use of music allowed them to connect with it more because it was a song everyone had heard before or at the very least everyone knew the artist Skepta.

Question 1 - Evaluation

Question 1 (E maze stopped working for me so i posted it here , sorry for the lack of creativity)

A Title sequence is done to give the audience a glimpse into either what the film is about or what happened in the past. It often uses images , and videos of the characters and the situations in which will later be shown in the film or touched upon. Title Sequences are done to give recognition to the key members of the crew and cast involved in the film making. It also shows the production and distribution company logos , overall promoting everyone from these films from actors to music supervisors.

However not all title sequences will be the same. Teen Drama Films have two different categories. High School Drama's and Youth Dramas. High School Dramas often take a more positive , romantic or comedic role with their sequences and films. For example films like The Inbetweeners Movie has a greater reliance on their stupid , ignorant characters , where as Youth Drama takes a different route.

Youth Drama tries to connect with their audience more by using more realistic and gripping story lines. They try to use real life events such as Drugs and Gang Culture to appeal to the audience , because many teenagers actually live knowing people like that or being involved in a similar that life themselves. Critically acclaimed films such as Adulthood and Kidulthood have portrayed this very well which is why they are so popular.

Each title sequence is different however all hold some similarities.

All state the names of the production companies and distribution companies at the beginning. This allows the audience to know the companies that are involved in making the film possible in terms of budgeting and release. This is followed by the title of the film they are watching. Then the names of the main characters follow , allowing the audience to know who is in it , recognizing some of their favorite actors or new ones to the film scene.Next follows the behind the scenes crew who many people don't know about or consider when thinking about films. The film usually ends with the names of the people who wrote it and the director , two roles that could be considered the most important outside of the main actors.

In terms of our own title sequence we chose to conform to the conventions of some real media products , specifically teen dramas. Our title sequence relies on a more gritty storyline. We took ideas from 8 Mile and decided to make a title sequence about rap.

This was one of the shots from our scene. We used this to have the less privileged rapper be around this area to show that these where his living arrangements. In most youth dramas the main character lives in a run , down estate and so we kept to this convention and stereotype. However in teen drama's there is never really a privileged person or rich person so one way we challenged it was by having the other main character be rather wealthy.

Using Social Media Further

I have decided to create a Tumblr page in order to connect more with our target audience as they are mainly teenagers. This Tumblr blog reflects our film and links you to the influences that we've had whilst in the process of putting our film together.

Final Day of Editing / 6th March

Today was the final day of editing as the deadline is at 4pm sharp. I came in at 9am so that I could spend all morning and lunch, making sure that everything was in place and that the correct titles were included. This took longer than expected as there were a few bad shots put into the film and our title sequence was far too long (3:50), so I had to remove some unnecessary footage. Also, whilst organising some of the shots, I disorganised some of the shots that went with the music as I wasn't watching carefully at what I was doing. Once I noticed the mistake I was making, I locked the music in place by clicking on the padlock on the far left hand side so that the soundtrack wouldn't be affected. Another aspect I changed was the title at the end of the film. Initially, we wanted to place the title at the end as it adds that special touch and almost serves as a finale to the sequence. However, after watching it all back, it looked too much like a trailer. Therefore, I moved the film title to it's correct place in the title sequence (after the second actor's name) and it looked much better. Overall, I think today has been a stressful day of trying to complete everything. Luckily, our film is finished and ready to be marked. I am personally not 100% happy with the outcome as I am a perfectionist myself and some of the shots we had were quite shaky and not 'smooth' enough. This could be an evaluation point and something that could have been changed.

Editing Session / 5th March

Today's editing session was mainly focused on re-watching our footage, seeing what could be changed, and adding in the extra titles that were missing. Me and Joram looked through all of the shots to make sure we never left any important ones out and during this process, we did come across a few clips that should have been in the film already. We also asked Dan for feedback on our footage and his main points of improvement were to: make the rapping scene at the end longer (as that's what people are waiting for/expecting to see) and to change the beginning so that the audience can connect more with the character and get an idea of what he's like instead of just seeing the back of his face (which is what our initial opening was).

Blogging Health Check 3

My most recent blogging health scored an 8/20.

My improvements were to blog more about my filming. editing and also the obstacles I faced during these stages.

Extension Blog Task 37: Further Changes to the Blog

After changing the layout of the blog the first time, I thought it looked a little bit too 'plain' as a whole and nothing stood out to me in particular. Therefore, to fix this problem, I decided to add a top header with our film's logo to give the blog a main focal point.

At first, this was the header that I had created. I downloaded the font ('Street Soul') online as I couldn't find a better font and the one's we had first initially selected didn't fit well. However after uploading this onto the blog, it still didn't hold much character and the blog was too monochrome.

So to resolve this issue, I decided to add in the companies logos that will be producing/distributing our film to the bottom of the title. Not only did this add more information about our film, it also made it more interesting to look at and gave it more character.

I created this header:

Here is the design of our blog now:

Blog Post 41: Blogging Health Check 2

My blogging work is now currently at a B (on target) with 15/20.

My improvements were to:
> Not leave any empty posts i.e Holiday Homework (which I have now completed and uploaded)
> Add some of my own points to my blog post on Motion, add some of my own research and skills that I have learnt
> Lastly, the post my re-make (however I was absent on the day so couldn't film one)

Blog Post 40: Revisions to Pitch

As a group, we have decided to not include the bedroom scene that we originally planned on filming as our opening. This is because we thought that it wouldn't fit in well with the rapping 'theme' and the soundtrack we chose wouldn't tie in well with a bedroom scene. Hopefully this turns out to be a good decision.

Creating Title Sequence

I used Motion to create the title sequence.  The challenges I faced were things such as making sure the template was transparent so that I could put it on top of my film footage. Unfortunately the first template I used was not working with my footage so I had to find an alternative option.
I tried different fonts to see which one suited the best with my film. I found one and used it in the title sequence.

Extension Activity: Wix Website

Here is the link to our very own website that I have created. It includes 4 different pages: Home (which introduces our film poster), Institutional Detail (which gives information about the companies producing/distributing our film), Information (includes the different equipment and software we used in the process) and lastly, the blog (which links to this blog).

Enjoy!

Film Poster

I have personally decided to create a film poster for our title sequence, to promote our film and reflect what it will be about. I used Photoshop to create the poster as I am extremely familiar with the software and I have used it plenty of times before.

Editing Session / 2nd March

Luckily today we had a 3 hour media lesson in the morning so that we had plenty of time to do some editing. In today's editing session, we mainly focused on completing the titles and making sure that they reflected well against the film. We chose a template and exported them all onto Final Cut Pro, however the particular template we chose wouldn't show up against our sequence (even though the background was made transparent). After consulting the technician, and finding out that we couldn't resolve the problem, we made the decision to re-do the titles with a different template. Again, we had many difficulties in making sure the titles appeared visibly against the sequence and didn't blend in. In some cases, the titles couldn't be seen against the background of the shot and this turned out to be extremely frustrating as I had to keep re-doing them in Motion. Another aspect of the sequence we did in today's lesson was work on the soundtrack. The track we chose is a copyright track however contains a deal of 'bad' words. In order to bleep out the most evident ones, we decided to lower the volume of music at that particular time. This took a while to get right but eventually it worked.

Reflection: Overall, I think that today's editing session was half a success. The panic mode has now started as our film is due at the end of this week. I'm most worried about getting the titles completed and looking somewhat decent.

Research: Analysing Real Media

Editing Session / 26th February

Today's editing session consisted of looking through all of the shots we had on our video drive and making sure that we didn't leave out any important ones. We asked our teacher, Dan, for feedback in which he mentioned that we should think about the beginning of our sequence and think about how we can make it more visually interesting to the audience. After thinking about this, we wasn't sure on what to do as we didn't have any extra clips to make this happen. Therefore, we stuck with what we got. However, we did re-arrange some of the shots we put e.g. instead of starting with an over the shoulder shot (as the audience wouldn't be able to connect with the character), we started with a shot where you can see the face. We still kept the over the shoulder shot as we really liked it and thought it made our sequence more interesting.

Reflection: As a whole, I think today's lesson was a bit stressful as were trying to figure out the best way to go about organising our clips and making sure they were in the correct order.

Thursday 5 February 2015

Production: Filming Session / 5th

Reflection: Today's filming session involved re-shooting some of our shots from the studio scene as well as the outside scenes of the "studio" building. When taking out the equipment this time, we decided to try using the fig rig and experiment with what we could do with it.

We first started off down in the studio, re-filming some of the shots but in different angles to make our film more interesting. Additionally, we also decided to film some close-ups of the studio equipment to show the privileged rappers wealthy side and his access to top quality equipment. Then we decided to go outside to film next to the Jamie Oliver restaurant again and also the subject walking into the "studio." This time, we used the fig rig to follow the privileged rapper on his journey and this had a much better effect as it shows him close-up.

Fortunately, when looking back at our shots this time, we didn't have any issues with what we filmed and we were happy with the angles that we have captured.

Monday 2 February 2015

Production: Reflection Session / 2nd

Instead of filming today, we decided as a group to look back on all of our shots and make a rough copy of what our title sequence would look like. We opened Final Cut Pro and arranged our shots in the correct order and this helped give us an idea of what the final outcome would be.

After some discussion on what soundtrack/music we should use, we decided to keep the song 'Ain't On Nuttin'', and just bleep out the inappropriate words. We decided to do this because we thought
that the beat of the song went best with our film and the beat attracts the attention of our audience.

Here is the song that we are using:

During this reflection time, we didn't focus much on the titles as we wanted to organise the actual footage so that we were prepared for when our editing journey begins.

Thursday 29 January 2015

Production: Filming Session / 29th

Reflection: Today's filming session involved taking the 73 bus a few stops from Angel to Essex Road. We took this journey in order for us to film our scenes of the less privileged rapper on the block. The location we chose was exactly what we wanted as it shows the grittiness of the area and reflects the characters 'background' well. Again, our choice of costume was a success as the less-privileged rapper dressed in the stereotypical hoodie, sweatpants and trainers.

This is the only location we went to on our second day of filming as we knew it would take a while to get the right amount of shots, as well as travelling back to college. After looking back at the shots we took, we decided that we didn't need to re-shoot any shots because they were what we wanted and we thought that we had the right amount. However, whilst in the middle of filming, we did need to re-shoot a lot of the shots as little things such as the subject looking into the camera, or coming into camera at the wrong time prevented us from getting the best material to edit.

Fortunately, it didn't start raining until we left so this caused no delays to our filming schedule and we managed to get the camera on and off the tripod well.

Monday 26 January 2015

Production: Filming Session / 26th

Reflection: Today we went down to the college studio, after getting permission, to film our studio scenes. Fortunately, we managed to film the scene without any problems as there were no issues with the camera and the shots we filmed were at the correct angles.
Our choice of costume went well as we showed clearly, when filming our close-up camera shot, the privileged rapper's expensive looking watch.
After looking back at the shots we took, we decided that we didn't need to re-shoot any shots however we did decide to film there another day, just to add some more camera shots and close-ups.

Building we used as the studio
Glass complex
We also decided to film in Angel, next to the Jamie Oliver restaurant, as the glass building fit in well with our desired location. We managed to film our scene of the privileged rapper walking beside the building, in various angles, with success. Fortunately, it didn't rain and we managed to get the camera on and off the tripod well. Whilst we was in the area, we decided to film the privileged rapper going into a 'studio', by using a building that looked good enough. To be able to use the building in our filming, we had to speak to the building manager who gave us permission.
After looking back on these collection of shots, we realised that you could see the reflection of the camera/tripod in some of the shots. To resolve the problem, we scheduled to re-film the faulty ones next week in Dan's lesson.

Updated Location

We have updated certain locations for our film,we decide to shoot one of our shots near an estate near our college to get a grasp of the urban background our character is meant to represent.

Storyboard Camera Shots

1. Close-up shot of person's face sleeping from 2 different angles
2. Another close up/mid-shot of person's face sleeping and alarm

16. Ends with a mid-shot of both characters clapping hands

Using Social Media When Filming

Before we go out to film our title sequence, it's essential that we set up a group twitter account. Our Twitter account is @TheExtraMile15 which relates to the title of our film opening. We will use this Twitter feed to let our teachers know what we are doing when filming. We will be tweeting photos of our filming shoot while we are out so that our teachers can see how we are getting on and our progress.

Updated Production Shedule

Needed props/costume

After showing our pitch and getting some positive feedback from Dan we decided to alter the attire of our privileged rappers bit more to flashy.

We chose to use white airforces because of how fresh they look once purchased. They are not that expensive - £67 - however they are long lasting and durable. This means as well as looking good they can endrue most weather and enviroments.

Purchased at JD sports and all other trainer retailers by Joel's Mother.

We chose a white juper because the colour white makes you look cleaner and fresher than wearing a black jumper.

Purchased at any good retailer by Joel's Mother.

The silver chain and earing represents wealth and fortune.

Borrowed from one of joel's freinds.

Bought in the market.

Pitch Feedback

Pitch Preparation

As preparation for our group pitch, I decided to organise our points by listing them and highlighting the parts in a different colour for each person in my group.

Pitch

Tuesday 20 January 2015

Pitch Task 6

6. Audience Detail

Our core target audience is young teens aged 15-19 and the wider target audience for our film is young adults/adults aged 20-30 or anyone who is interested in rapping or possibly becoming a rapper.

As we are an independent film, we will need to attract an audience to our film using many social networking sites such as creating a Facebook page and a Twitter account. The majority of teens use these sites regularly so both sites are a good platform to creating an audience.

We will address them in our title sequence through our two main characters who are both young teens themselves. It shows the reality of young people working towards their dream, whilst showing the stereotypes people make of rapping today. Some young teens could also relate to our storyline of wanting to become a rapper in the music industry, which can be quite tough due to the amount of competition.

Pitch Tasks 4 & 5

4. Representation

We will be introducing the two main characters who are both from opposite backgrounds. We are also going to include some other youths as a background audience for the less privileged youth when he is rapping on the estate.

The social groups evident are 'gangsters' chilling in the area and to represent them we will have a group of boys huddled together dressed stereotypically in dark coloured clothing e.g. tracks and hoodies.

5. Institutional Detail

> Our film will be an independent production
> Production company producing our film is called 'Big Talk Productions' and the distributing company is called 'Momentum Pictures'.

Due to the fact our film is an independent production, we have to rely on a low budget and this could affect the type of titles and credits we use. This type of ownership also affects the hardware we have available e.g. cameras. We have to rely on the resources we have available to us, compared to a mainstream film which would have a whole crew just for the filming part of production.

Blog Task 38: Pitch Tasks 1-3

1. The Film

The Title of our film is called 'The Extra Mile'

Plot: The film is about two aspiring rappers who are from two complete different backgrounds; one privileged youth with the equipment to be successful but not the drive, and another youth less privileged with the drive and passion to become a rapper but not the finances or equipment.

The opening scene will introduce us to the two main characters and also the stereotypical social group of a 'gang'. They both portray different strengths and weaknesses throughout the sequence, and the narrative aspect makes that obvious e.g. the privileged rapper has a much more sophisticated attire which represents his wealth compared to the opposite character who delivers nothing special to the camera

2. What type of title sequence is it?

Our title sequence is going to be narrative as the titles will be on a moving image. The action taking place behind the titles will make it some what obvious of what is happening e.g. the different locations for the different characters.

The title sequence that has influenced us is Get Rich or Die Tryin'. This is because the film has a similar story plot of a boy wanting to complete his life-long dream of becoming a rapper as well as similar rapping music and costume.
We are going to conform to the conventions and perceptions everyone has about rap being a male dominated world.

3. What type (sub-genre) of Teen Film is it?

Our title sequence is a Youth Drama and a real media film title sequence that has inspired us is 8 Mile because, like Get Rich or Die Tryin', the film has a similar story plot and shows the boy miming to words in the title sequence and not actually saying them. We want to conform to that aspect of the sequence as that's what we want to create.

Blog Task 37: Branding Our Blog Visually

I decided to change the design of our blog so that it reflects the ideas of our film as a whole. As our film is about rapping, I personally thought that the colour black would suit best.

I also changed the font of the main title Group 2 to 'Fortdiner Swanky' as I thought it reflected well on the blog as a whole and it also has a rough look to it.

Blog Post 34: Production Schedule

Blog Task 33: First Draft Storyboard

Blog Post 32: Wardrobe

The following pictures are images of the clothes i am likely to wear representing my character , the privileged rapper in our opening scene.

These jeans are the jeans i chose to use for my part is due to the fact they are my most expensive jeans at £55. Having my most expensive jeans on me as i am acting as a rich rapper is more believable because we are giving the impression  of my characters wealth.

We decided that my character should wear a polo shirt because it is a more sophisticated and more intelligent look than wearing a hoodie. This again gives the idea that he is from a different class than his friend who will be dressed in more baggy clothing.

This is the jumper I will wear on top of the polo shirt to have the cool, smart and casual look.

One of these two will be the shoes I wear.

Blog Post 31: Costume

The Privileged rapper
Polo shirt
Black Jumper
Jeans
Trainers

The Less Privilaged rapper
Jogging Bottoms
Hoodies
Snapbacks
Puff Jacket

Blog Task 30: Locations

Locations

One of our locations will be the college. This is because it is a rather big site and based on the various locations and buildings and rooms we would be able to film a lot of what we need here. The college also has a studio in which we are planning to use for our filming as well.

We thought we could use this as the outside area for the less privileged rapper to be introduced in and practising his rapping. This is a rather gritty looking area located next to the college.

This building next to the college is a huge glass complex. Filming this with the privileged rapper walking beside it or into it would emphasize how much more he is than the other character.

Originally we had planned to use someone's house to film the privileged rapper in bed and going through his morning routine before heading to the studio. However just in case we are unable to use someone's house for our filming we took this image and would film him outside of here before heading off, cutting short the title sequence. However this is just simply a back-up plan.

We also have permission to use the college studio for the scenes with the privileged rapper.

Interactions - Usually the relationship between the teachers/adults and the youth is a far less serious on. This is primarily due to the lack of focus and ambition the children have. Their interactions often are more jokey.

Camera - the opening scene includes a birds eye view camera shot. This allows the camera to pick up a lot of people at one go and see them about their daily business. It allows the camera to see the different social groups all at once due to the angle and high of the camera.
There is also a few over the shoulder shots. This shows the conversation between two people from the view point of one person , looking at the face of the person he is interacting with.
There is also a mid shot , showing the two males who have just met from the waist upwards. This plaves focus mostly on them however you can see the business of the backround.

Editing - The credits that appear on the screen are big bold and rather coourful. they font looks childish and graffiti likes , this shows how it is affliated wth a school/child like atmosphere.
There are often rapid quick transisitons between the meeting of different cliques shoing the divide and hwo many cliques the new kid is being introduced to.
